Recently, the Spanish school Nueva Lengua received a visit from a very special person. Danny Guk is a Korean actor and film director, who was learning Spanish and traveling around Colombia with us. Danny studied at the Seoul National University of Arts, then did a first cultural immersion in Barcelona, and finally decided to come to Colombia to perfect his Spanish skills.

Danny knew nothing of Colombia before coming to study in Nueva Lengua, and it was nothing but arriving so that he could immediately discover its cultural and natural riches. Thus, what had begun as a trip like any other to learn languages, quickly became an adventure of more than 11 weeks around the country, in which he could directly encounter its immense historical, ecological, artistic, and social heritage.

During the months of his journey, Danny was able to visit 3 of the 5 campuses of the school: the one in Cartagena —also known as La Heroica—, the one in Ibagué —nicknamed the Musical City of Colombia— and the one in Bogotá —our capital and more. big metropolis. In addition to his career as an actor and director, he has a YouTube channel in which, among other things, he tells of his travel experiences; there he recorded his passage through the three cities, and in one of his most recent videos he decided to explain what, according to him, are the main reasons that make Bogotá the ideal destination to learn Spanish abroad.

So, without further ado, here we bring you the…

Five reasons to study Spanish in Bogotá, according to a Korean student

  1. Total immersion in Spanish

Before coming to Colombia, Danny was studying Spanish in Barcelona. And although his experience in the city was very pleasant, his immersion in the language could never be complete. Something that usually happens in big cities is that, due to globalization, it is easy to find people who speak English. This is good for tourists who are just passing through as they can be easily understood, but an impediment when your goal is to learn the local language.

In Bogotá, unlike other major cities in the world, the percentage of speakers of other languages is low. This, coupled with the small Korean population in the city, meant that Danny was able to fully concentrate on his Spanish and perfect it while traveling and learning about the activities organized for him by Nueva Lengua.

2. Better prices, better experiences

Something that impressed Danny from day one was the cost of goods and services in Bogotá. According to his own experience, the cost of living in cities like Barcelona or Seoul is much higher than that of Bogotá. Lodging and accommodation prices, for example, are up to two and three times cheaper, a saving that translates into the possibility of accessing a greater number of tourist, cultural and gastronomic experiences, all under the same budget!

If you go out to eat during the day, the traditional current —sort of like the Spanish menu del dia— can run you about $3, and the best local beers are available for less than 50 cents a bottle. Furthermore, in Nueva Lengua Spanish courses include tourist activities and cultural immersion, so you do not have to purchase additional tourist packages to your classes at the school

3. A metropolis in the middle of nature

From a very young age, Danny's great dream was to discover the Amazon. For this reason, when he found out that he could reach her by taking a flight of less than two hours from Bogotá, he did not think twice and embarked. This is precisely the third great advantage that he found in Bogotá: its privileged location.

In addition to the Amazon jungle, Bogotá is also just an hour's flight from the Pacific Ocean and the Caribbean Sea. The city stands at 2640 meters above sea level, in the heart of the Andes Mountains, so it is far from being a conventional metropolis. In it modernity and nature are combined, the buildings with the mountains; For this reason, when you visit its historic center, you cannot miss the view from the Monserrate Hill, highest point of the city.

4. Bogotá nightlife

Everyone knows that Latin America is synonymous with partying, and Bogotá is no exception. After taking Spanish classes at Nueva Lengua in the morning and attending tours and tourist activities in the afternoon, Danny took advantage of the evenings to go out and have fun with the friends he made at school.

Bogotá nightlife is very varied. Here you can find places for all tastes, but without a doubt the main thing is Latin and tropical rhythms. Thanks to the dance classes included in all the school's courses, Danny was able to perfect his skills and enjoy the rumba to the fullest. He was also able to meet the famous chiva rumbera, an unforgettable party on wheels in the best Colombian style.

5. A city with open arms

But none of the above reasons would have been enough if it weren't for an unmistakable characteristic of all Colombians: their incredible kindness. Despite cultural differences and any language barriers, Danny always felt at home. Through the management of Nueva LenguaDuring the months of his stay, Danny was able to stay in the homes of host families, who received him as one of the others and supported him in everything he needed during those weeks.

Without this opportunity, Danny's time in Colombia would not have been complete. that's why in Nueva Lengua We ensure that our students live total immersive experiences. Here you will get to know the most emblematic tourist sites in the country, while you will dare to discover unique destinations and hidden gems in each place you visit.
