It was the end of January and it hadn't rained in Bogotá for several weeks. For many the great heat in Colombia was a problem, for me, coming from a long and cold European winter, it was a dream!
my first day of classes in Nueva Lengua I was as excited as my first day of school! After so many years I was going back to studying, at school, an apparently easy language, but in reality with a very, very difficult grammar!
Carlos was the name of my first Spanish teacher, a boy from Bogotá, young but very, very good at his job. I still remember the first question he asked me when we were reading an article in El Tiempo: “What do you say newspaper in Spanish?” – “Diary” I answered. A big laugh followed and the question “Are you Italian?”. And there I realized that I needed something more than two weeks of Spanish course!
Today is my last day here at Nueva Lengua, I learned that a newspaper is called “Periódico”, that in Colombia every occasion is good to celebrate, that there are so many places to explore and that they are all wonderful, many of these I would not have known if I had never been through Nueva Lengua. I learned that Spanish grammar, however difficult it may be, can become enjoyable if it is explained to you by good, friendly and prepared teachers like the ones I met here. I have learned that going back to school is not so bad, quite the opposite, it is a pleasure!
With me I take from this school not only a fluent Spanish, comrades from all over the world, and teachers who today are like cousins to me! I am taking with me an experience that will remain engraved in my heart forever, which made me grow and understand that every day is always a new and beautiful opportunity to grow and learn new things.
But here are some of the things I'll mostly miss about Nueva Lengua:
Learn the secrets of Colombian cuisine thanks to the school's cooking lessons.
Friday night playing Shuffleboard, between bangs and beers!
Trips to secret places like the Nemocòn mine, near Bogotá, known thanks to Nueva Lengua
Walks in the middle of nature, such as in the Arvì Park in Medellín
I ate coconut in a nature reserve surrounded by mangroves near Cartagena!
Discover the secrets of the Spanish colonization and the history of this fantastic country visiting fantastic places like the Castillo de San Felipe in Cartagena
Dive into a volcano made of mud!
Celebrate important parties where you learn many new things about Colombian culture (and dress up as cumbia dancers!!)
Spend the afternoon playing soccer with the children of the Comuna 13 of Medellín
and finally, what I am going to miss the most from these beautiful months that I spent in Nueva Lengua studying Spanish, they are: my teachers
If you have any questions, whether or not to study Spanish in Colombia, don't waste time: buy a ticket and fly to Colombia from this beautiful family called Nueva Lengua!
