children's dining room
Bogotá, Stefanie Mühlemann – At intervals of 4 to 7 weeks, on Tuesdays, we go to lunch together. This is in a poor area of the city. Between 100 – 200 children (age approx. 1 – 13 years old) come to eat in a span of 1 hour. There are three courses: soup, main course and fruit juice. If you don't eat the soup, you won't get the main course and the same with the fruit juice. Since this is the only meal of the day for most children, the rules are very strict.
They allowed me to be there twice and it was an awesome experience. The first time, my Spanish was not good enough to have a good and fluent conversation with the children. However, this was not a disadvantage. Boys and girls are very interested in learning words in other languages. They are also particularly good at communicating with gestures and facial expressions. For example, the children ask if it would be possible to lift them so that they can touch the ceiling. Their houses are often built very deep, so this is a big event for them. They are also incredibly excited about our visit each time and already know what questions they want to ask us: “What country are you from?”, “How long have you been here?”, “Do you speak Spanish well?”, etc.
At the beginning of March 2016 I was there for the first time. The second time was at the end of April 2016. It was very touching that some of the children recognized me. They smiled all over their faces and greeted me. We discussed various things with young and old and at the same time served them food. As soon as they have eaten, most of them go out to play in the street or at home.
This Tuesday they received new shoes for school. They were overjoyed and presented us with the shiny white shoes. However, this was not easy: The boys and girls had to be patient, because only one woman distributed the shoes and this took a long time.
Normally there is the possibility to eat there as a group of volunteers. Of course, only when you can make sure that all the children have eaten. Then the teacher of Nueva Lengua it takes us to the roof and from there you can see over the settlement and have a view of a small part of the city of Bogotá.
Awesome!
