Colombia is a global tourist destination and every year the number of people interested in knowing this paradisiac place grows. Not only for its biodiversity, gastronomy, culture and beauty.

More and more people want to live in this part of the world and this happens because of the opportunities they see to progress in their personal projects and decide to have a stable life in our country.

American, Canadian and European retirees all have Colombia on their list of “Best Places to Retire” But Why?

COP: Colombian Pesos

For a pensioner, the cost of living here is cheaper than in his country, with a currency like ours and they manage to lower their monthly expenses by up to 50%.

Rick is an American librarian who, upon arriving in Cartagena, decided to live there without a second thought. When he rented an apartment in one of the most emblematic neighborhoods in the Colombian Caribbean for around 700 USD. He decided it was the place where he wanted to spend the rest of his retirement.

Eating in restaurants became a lifestyle that it did not have before, since with a "Menu of the day" for 12.000. pesos was better than going to the supermarket. Buying fresh fruits and vegetables for so few pesos amazed him - "It is incredible that the man arrives at the door of your house with all the varieties and so cheap. A papaya, five bananas and a dozen mangoes for less than 4 dollars, it's heaven"- Rick says excited and with a smile on his face.

My people

One of the characteristics they use the most to describe ourselves abroad is the adjective kind. What is everyday for us is extraordinary for them. Being able to see that kindness and joy makes them easily fall in love with Colombians.

Kyle is a man from Texas who was in Medellín and by asking some people for information about the subway, he won the love of a Paisa family. He was a bit lost and wanted to reach his destination but what he found in the end was a warm welcome with a chocolate in the living room of the Acosta family house; amazed by so much kindness the next day he already knew where he wanted to live, since he already had a family in Medellín.

The tropics

The geographical position of our country makes us a very privileged country. The Andes mountain range makes it possible for all thermal floors to exist. In addition, Colombia is considered the country with the greatest diversity of birds in the world, the second in biodiversity and the third in water resources.

When a retiree adds the low costs of real estate, the climatic advantages of living in the tropics, the results are going to be favorable.

Jan is a German who got tired of living under the four seasons every year in his country. Colombia became his home when he decided to buy an apartment strategically located to enjoy the Colombian diversity. -“I am a simple man, I don't need much. That is why I decided to buy my house in Villa de Leyva, it is a beautiful little town ... I love the countryside and the climate is perfect for a German"

Spanish speaking

The stories of Rick, Kyle and Jan would not be possible if they had not learned Spanish first. They saw the need to learn the language in order to communicate, but also how useful it would be if they wanted to travel through Latin America, meet people from other countries and connect culturally with their new country.

There are 21 Spanish-speaking countries in the world and in Colombia about ten dialects of Spanish are spoken, which makes it an ideal place to learn the language.
