With the boom that the world is currently experiencing in terms of digital technologies, many people affirm that the bookstores and libraries of the planet have already been replaced by ebooks and audiobooks. The reality, however, is very different, since visiting a library is not limited to the simple exercise of reading. The smell of old pages, the slight noise of footsteps, and the charm of carrying a beautiful edition in your hands, turn these places into complete and irreplaceable sensory experiences that go far beyond what a screen or digital document can. they could provide us.

Part of the charm of learning a nueva lengua is in being able to enjoy their stories, their stories and their literature. That is why language students are often interested in these spaces, as they allow them to hone their language skills while soaking up the culture they are learning about.

Among the most famous and visited by students from all over the world are libraries such as Trinity College Dublin, the Alexandrina Library in Egypt, the Stuttgart Public Library, or the Livraria Lello in O Porto, also famous for its various scenes of the famous movie saga were shot Harry Potter. And it is that, in addition to its impressive catalogue, these libraries share another aspect that makes them a must-see for tourists and locals: their architecture.

But something that many people do not know is that here in Colombia, and more specifically in Bogotá, we also have cultural and architectural heritage like these. It is the Virgilio Barco Public Library, located in the town of Teusaquillo, to the west of the city.

The library, open to the public since 2001, is the work of the Colombian architect Rogelio Salmona. The combination given to the building between geometry, landscape and functionality is admirable to give way to this wonderful space, which presents a bit of the Quimbaya culture on its terraces, a Greek stage, an auditorium, an exhibition hall and a Endless spaces to discover and enjoy.

En Nueva Lengua We visited the Library with our students. This time we took a tour of the different rooms that it has, we toured the general room, the children's room, the Bogotá room, the video library, the sound library and, finally, the graphic district and cartoon room. We also visited other areas of the library such as the terrace and the gardens that surround the building, and we enjoyed the beauty of the reflecting pools in the building.

Student Testimonials

  • Jacques, a student from France, highlighted that the best of all is being able to feel the smell of the books in person, a sensation that cannot be described in words, just enjoy.
  • Likewise, our student Ellena was amazed with the structure of the library. The combination of nature and brick is something that few architects in the world have managed to balance.
  • For his part, Michael says that the exteriors of the library are wonderful, and even suggested that we host a picnic there.
  • And for Cristy and Frank, students from India, it is wonderful for the eyes to be able to appreciate the architecture and landscapes that surround the library, as well as being able to immerse themselves in wonderful worlds through the different readings that it offers us.
