World Youth Day (WYD) is a meeting promoted by the Catholic Church that brings together young people from all over the world in the company of the Pope. This initiative was born in 1984 with Pope John Paul II and, since then, it has been carried out around the world every 3 or 4 years. This celebration has been held in countries such as Italy, Spain, Poland, United States, Canada, Australia, Brazil, Panama, Portugal among others.
The last meeting was in August 2023 in Lisbon, Portugal. It was celebrated with Pope Francis and brought together around 1.500.000 young people from all over the world. From August 2 to 6, there was a meeting of cultures, beliefs, songs, prayers, experiences and learning.
School members Nueva Lengua They have had the opportunity to attend several WYD meetings, like Professor Julio Rodríguez, who was in this last experience, and who had the fortune of meeting a former student of the school: Frank Lino, from the United States. “It was a unique and unforgettable experience,” says our student. This meeting between young people breaks borders and overcomes language barriers: there is a universal language of love and faith.
Something curious is that for communication in this last meeting, Spanish was a key language, since the majority of speeches, prayers, concerts were in this language and Spanish-speaking participation was significant. Many even helped to be translators from Spanish to other languages. With this, many learned words and expressions by being said repeatedly by the interlocutors.
