If you plan to come to learn Spanish in Medellín, you must first learn something about the history, culture and traditions of the paisas. But first, surely you are wondering what or who are the country, true?

The word paisa comes from countryman, meaning farmer, and here in Colombia it is used to refer to the natives of a large region of Colombia made up of the departments of Antioquia, Quindío, Risaralda and Caldas, as well as a portion of northern Tolima and Valle del Cauca. However, more than geographical limits, the paisas are united by their history and their characteristic way of living life.

Paisa cultural identity has its roots in the history of the so-called colonization. Before the arrival of its first settlers, the mountainous area of western Colombia was an immense and impenetrable forest. Years ago, this region had been inhabited by numerous indigenous communities, and since their disappearance no one had dared to enter those thick mountains. But with the independence processes of Colombia, economic development skyrocketed and families began to grow and become more and more numerous, and that is how its inhabitants were forced to look for new lands.

With machetes in hand, the peasant families set about the task of conquering and colonize the hitherto unexplored territory of the foothills of the Western Cordillera. Quickly, the jungles became roads, the virgin lands became agricultural land, the camps became large settlements, and the mountainous heart of Colombia became the cradle of the Paisa people.

Thanks to this long history of several centuries of development, the paisas have inherited, generation after generation, a series of cultural traditions that today are unmistakable characteristics of their way of life: from the words they use, to what they eat, And till how do they dress.

Its story is that of a group of men and women who decided to unite and dared to plunge into the unknown in search of a better life for all, that is why today the paisas are defined by their entrepreneurial spirit, their kindness, industriousness, and a constant desire for adventure.

These are the greatest virtues of its people, always "throwing forward" and with open arms for all those who, like their grandparents, dare to explore this region and fall in love with the beauty of its nature and the charm of its people. .

Dare to know this region by the hand of Nueva Lengua! The kindness of the Paisa people awaits you to learn Spanish with the flavor of its coffee and the color of its mountains.
