The Policarpa Salavarrieta House Museum, located in the town of Guaduas, Colombia, is a place of great historical and cultural value that pays homage to a fundamental figure in the independence processes of Latin America. While the history of the region is marked by the struggle for rights and the participation of prominent leaders such as Simón Bolívar, the contribution of some other important influential figures in these historical events has been largely underestimated.

Policarpa Salavarrieta was born on January 26, 1795 in the Villa de Guaduas, municipality of the former Viceroyalty of New Granada, today the Republic of Colombia. Polycarp, better known as the Pola, challenged the traditional roles assigned to women at that time and became a relevant figure in the fight against Spanish colonialism and the search for independence. Her courage and determination led her to play a crucial role in obtaining freedom for Colombia.

The museum, which occupies the house that was inherited from his father, is a living representation of the colonial era. It preserves its original architectural style, with medium-sized rooms and a beautiful central patio adorned with gardens and typical decorations of the time. Visitors can delve into the story of Policarpa Salavarrieta through first-person accounts that narrate the most important events of his life, including the tragic loss of his family due to smallpox and his relationship with literature and writing, something that back then it was unusual for women.

The museum also displays the clothing used in colonial times. Among them is a long and soft dress accompanied by an apron, which was the typical clothing for women of the time. In addition, you can see guadero hats with a wide brim and an elongated tip, used to protect themselves from the sun, and a pair of espadrilles that were the common footwear among the people of the Colombian countryside.

It is important to highlight that the Museo Casa de Policarpa Salavarrieta strives to rescue and disseminate the historical memory of this outstanding woman, as well as promote the conservation of architectural heritage and the memory of what women contributed through the political history of Colombia and Latin America.

Visitors have the opportunity to immerse themselves in the life and legacy of Policarpa Salavarrieta, understanding the relevance of her participation in independence and recognizing the importance of highlighting the history of women who, like her, also left a significant mark in the fight for freedom and justice on the continent. The museum thus becomes a place of reflection and recognition of the worth of the Colombian people.
