The Holy Week is one of the most important celebration for Catholics. In Colombia it is felt and celebrated and there are different religiuos celebrations in different parts of the country, especially during Thursday and Friday, exactly before Easter.. During the bank holidays everything is closed, included our Spanish school.

Considering that you will not have lessons until the next Monday, you should take advantage and explore 7 churches in Bogota that during this week are adorned especially for all these Easter’s celebrations.

7 Churches to visit during Holy Week in Bogotá

  • Catedral Primada

His construction in neoclassical style dated 1807 is dominating Plaza Bolivar in the heart of the Historic Centre and it is considered the most important and biggest Church of the City. It has been declared a National Monument for his historic, architectural and cultural importance.

  • Capilla de Sagrado

Raised between 1660 and 1700, it has a Baroque style facade. It is one of the most visited Churches of Bogotá during the Holy Week. You can find it just next to the Catedral Primaria in Plaza Bolivar.

Nuestra Señora del Carmen

This Church was designed by the Italian Salesian architect Giovanni Buscaglione.The Cathedral has a gothic Florentine style with a mix of byzantine and arab styles. The Church has been nominated National Monument and you can admire it in Carrera 5 No. 8-36

Nuestra Señora de la Candelaria

Located in the hearth of the Candelaria, Carrera 4 No. 11-62. Also this Church has been nominated National Monument, it definetly has an important historic meaning for the City and a big architectural and cultural value.

Iglesia de San Francisco

Located exactly in front of the Gold Museum. It is the most ancient Church in Bogotá, it was build up between the 1550 and 1567. Inside you could admire a gold altar and a roof with wooden beam and a baroque style.

Santuario del Señor Caido de Monserrate

Dominating the city from the top, the Church of the Cerro de Monserrate date back to 1620, but it was finished in 1657. Only in the 1925 achieved the look as we see it today. During all the year is the most visited and important tourist attraction of the City and during Holy Week the atmosphere is even more magic!

Nuestra Señora de Lourdes

It is situated in the hearth of Chapinero, at a few blocks from our Spanish Nueva Lengua, this majestic Church has been erected in recent years. It is date back 1904, founded by the archbishop Vicente Arbeláez that with this temple gave to the neighborhood a big and beautiful place to pray!
