Less than 100 kilometers from Bogotá, in the middle of the central mountain range of the Colombian Andes, is a small town where history and nature come together to offer its visitors an unparalleled cultural and ecological experience. This is the Villa de San Miguel de las Guaduas, better known in Colombia as Guaduas.
Founded in 1572, Guaduas was established from the beginning as a mandatory stop in the middle of the historic Camino Real de Santa Fe (link), an important commercial route that for more than three centuries connected the capital with the Magdalena River, the Caribbean Sea and Europe. .
After three hundred years of colonization, the Colombian people finally achieved independence from Spain in 1819, and although this has been an autonomous country since then, Colombians have had the privilege of preserving many of the cultural and architectural treasures established in those years within of our territory.
One of these treasures is the historic center of Guaduas, a beautiful park built in the best style of colonial urban planning: with cobblestone floors, with the cathedral located on one side, the old government house on the other, and surrounded by houses that have been preserved. the facades and the original appearance of the fascinating colonial era.
Among the milestones that have taken place in Guaduas during its more than 400 years of history, the passage of the Royal Botanical Expedition stands out, led by the Spanish botanist José Celestino Mutis at the end of the XNUMXth century. During this, the plant that gives its name to the town was classified for the first time: the guadua, a species of South American bamboo that spreads and adorns the mountains and riversides of the region.
With an estimated population of 41,000 inhabitants, Guaduas remains today an important ecotourism destination, where nature lovers can experience first-hand the tranquility and beauty of this Andean paradise, just 3 hours from Bogotá.
