Getsemaní and the Historic Center of Cartagena de Indias bring together different gastronomic venues, perfect for discovering the flavors of Colombia and the Caribbean.

Restaurants, fruit carts, fried food tables and many more places constitute the heritage of colors and flavors of this city, and are part of Colombia's cultural offering.

In Spanish school Nueva Lengua We wanted to give our students a sample of this gastronomic wealth. Therefore, on this occasion we want to tell you about some of the things that you cannot miss during our gastronomic tours of the city, so that you can have fun during your visit to Cartagena and enjoy the local food.

Fruit juices: Our tour begins in Gethsemane, in the popular Callejón Angosto, very close to the school headquarters Nueva Lengua.

Cartagena is a city in the Caribbean, so it can get very hot during the day. This is why we like to start our gastronomic tours fresh, trying juices made with the most exotic and special fruits of the region. Green mango (or “biche”, as it is called here), sour guava or passion fruit are just a few of the many flavors available. Perfect to cool off while we continue walking!

Fried: From the Callejón Angosto you continue to the Plaza de la Trinidad –cradle of Colombian independence–. This place has positioned itself as one of the busiest gastronomic spots in the city, and there you can find a wide variety of street food. One of the most loved options by locals and foreigners are the famous “fritos”: egg arepas, stuffed potatoes, bean fritters, empanadas of different flavors, among many others. And a piece of advice, don't forget to accompany them with the region's signature sauce: coastal whey! In these street stalls, it is usual to find it in its spicy variant, prepared with a base of Tabasco chili. An unmissable accompaniment.

Fruits: From Plaza de la Trinidad, our next stop is the Clock Tower: gateway to the Historic Center of Cartagena. On the way to the Center you must cross the emblematic Centenario Park, where the fruit carts are located. This sales model characterizes the Cartagena economy, in addition to filling it with color and flavor. Here, it is a must to try the mango biche, always accompanied by

salt, pepper and lemon. Other fruits that usually attract the attention of our students for their particular flavor and for being unique to this place are the mamón (also called “mamoncillo” in other regions of Colombia), the granadilla, the sapote and the spectacular yellow pitaya.

The Raspao: After our first three stops, and despite having already had a good juice for the heat, it is necessary to cool off once again. Therefore, after touring Centenario Park we headed to the Clock Tower Square, where you will always find the solution: the “raspao”. This ice-based drink is, without a doubt, the favorite of all Cartagenans. It consists of a cone of grated ice, with syrup of different sweets, from fruity to some soda-based preparations. Our recommended ones are the kola one and the tamarind one. And don't forget to order it with condensed milk. You will be fascinated!

Sweet: In this same square, adjacent to the Clock Tower, is the Portal de los Dulces, a space where many merchants gather to offer a wide variety of typical pastries from the north coast of

Colombia, very popular with local children... but also with adults. Cocadas, tamarinds, enyucados, fruit sweets, alegrías and milk dolls are just some of the preparations that you can find there. They can be ordered separately, or they also sell you tasting trays, with small portions of each of the sweets, so you don't miss the opportunity to try them all.
