Association activities in Spanish class They are a great way to help students understand and remember concepts, vocabulary, and grammatical structures. These activities encourage connections between ideas and words, which can improve language retention and comprehension. Below are some ideas for association activities that can be used during Spanish classes:

1 – Association of images and words

On the one hand, images on a specific topic are presented (for example, about hobbies in Spanish); on the other hand, words or phrases that describe those images. Afterwards, students are asked to associate the image with the correct word. This is especially useful for learning vocabulary.

2 – Association of words and meanings

A list of words in Spanish and their definitions is provided. This can be a semantic field activity where they associate vocabulary with all the words and elements that are related. Subsequently, students must relate each word with its corresponding meaning.

3 – Association of synonyms and antonyms

This activity can be developed from word searches or crossword puzzles, also through an end-to-end list of words, on the one hand, the concepts and their respective synonyms and antonyms. In this way, students must find the answers. This will help them expand their vocabulary and better understand the relationships between words.

4 – Association of phrases

In this activity there is a series of disorganized sentences which must be reorganized to make sense, taking into account the verbs, the subject and the complements. This will help students understand the grammatical structure of sentences.

5 – Association of historical events with dates

This activity can be used especially when teaching the past and at more advanced levels when talking about history. A timeline displays a list of important historical events in the world and the dates they occurred. Students must match each event with its corresponding date.

6 – Gender and noun association

From the beginner level to A1 and A2, emphasis can be placed on the grammatical gender (masculine and feminine) in Spanish, which in many cases is a bit difficult. To teach it in a playful way, you can provide a list of nouns distributed on the table and then ask students to associate each noun with its corresponding gender that has been previously taught.

7 – Association of questions and answers

There is a series of questions with the most used interrogative pronouns and at the other end the corresponding answers. Students must match each question with the appropriate answer.

These ideas that we have provided are often done during classes at our school, according to each level; Taking this into account facilitates the appropriate selection of the topic and the methodology to be used. For example, in the following images you can see a group of A1 level students whose topic is hobbies and free time activities. As a group they had to match the images with their respective meaning and name. Subsequently, each one expressed her favorite activity and the frequency with which it is done. In this way, the present tense, vocabulary, oral communication and visual perception could be practiced grammatically.
