Thomas is a young Frenchman, he came to Bogotá excited to get to know the city, the culture and the language, for his position motivated by his Colombian girlfriend.
He came to our school with a very basic vocabulary in Spanish, determined to learn the language, he started classes with a group of different nationalities such as English, American, Japanese and German. During 8 weeks he studied, learned grammar, did his homework, read, listened, asked a lot, he always asked!
He made new friends, friends of the world, and as he himself affirms: “I learned while having fun”.
During this time he had a great time, he learned, he advanced safely, without fear he risked speaking, participating, connecting his mother tongue with Spanish, he identified the grammatical similarities, which helped him to understand Spanish, after understanding them, worked on differences. What he did not understand, he clarified with the teachers, he always asked!
He observed the day-to-day life and customs of Colombians, he listened to them speak, he saw them transport themselves by bus, in Transmilenio (a very popular means of transport), by bicycle to their place of work and home, this contributed a lot to their learning, all of them every day he learned something new: words, expressions, customs, habits, ways of life, etc.
He always participated in class with a friendly smile, helping his classmates to understand as well.
In Colombia the adjective to describe these people is: “come forward ”(toadvance, have positive ambitions, insist).
Thomas dedicated himself to knowing the language, understanding customs and habits, understanding that there are differences and accepting our idiosyncrasies.
In each group he shared, he always supported his peers, teacher and class environment, this allowed him to interact and feel motivated to move forward.
We remember his warmth, kindness and help, in addition to growing with him in his learning, he advanced very quickly reaching an intermediate level, communicating and making jokes in Spanish.
He recently returned to Paris, from there he continues to practice so as not to forget what learned in the Spanish language. We hope that Thomas will return to visit us soon.
