My name is Allison Gever, I was a student at Nueva Lengua And it turned out to be an experience beyond what I expected. Both students and staff were very friendly and always ready to help. What I liked about the school were the different evening excursions that were offered almost every day and that changed weekly. These activities facilitated the mixing of students.

As a teacher, I was concerned about how different students with such different levels and background would be accommodated. Leydis was my teacher and was able to assess our needs and modify the lessons accordingly. For example, he was more interested in Colombian culture and literature than grammar, so Leydis gave us readings on Gabriel García Márquez and even planned a trip to the Museo del Caribe in Barranquilla to learn more about Márquez and other Caribbean influences in Colombia. . I also enjoyed the topics he presented to drive discussion in the target language, and admired Leydis's structure and focus in each class.

One memory regarding my host family was when I had a sore throat and my host mother insisted on giving me the alum stone to cure the pain. The concoction he made worked, but the next day my ears hurt, so he took oregano from his garden, mashed it, and made natural oregano oil for me to cure the earache. I will always remember Nueva Lengua lovingly, and I am grateful for the experiences they gave me!
