Villa de Leyva is a Colombian town located in the Boyacá region, founded in 1572.
It is characterized by its colonial-style architecture and its rural landscapes such as the Páramo area or the desert area.
Its huge main square, made of stone, is surrounded by old colonial buildings. It is considered one of the most beautiful towns in Colombia, and is one of the most important tourist destinations in all of Colombia.
Villa de Leyva is an ideal place to rest, immerse yourself in history, science, art and culture as well as being an excellent place to be in contact with nature, ideal for stargazing thanks to the low light pollution and the large desert areas
The economy of the municipality of Villa de Leyva is based on tourism, agriculture and the export of stone, clay and marble.
Near Villa de Leyva you can visit sites of great natural and cultural interest such as:
- The Paletnological Research Center with an impressive collection of Colombian sea monsters that coexisted with the dinosaurs in prehistory;
- The blue wells, which are artificial lakes of water colored an intense blue by the action of nitrogenous salts, which produces a great surprise for both visitors and the inhabitants of Villa de Leyva;
- Iguaque Flora and Fauna Sanctuary: protected area made up of several lagoons with great historical significance;
- Ráquira: considered the capital of Colombian crafts and named as one of the most beautiful towns in Boyacá due to the picturesque decoration of its houses.
