Today I fulfilled a long time dream: I served the soup kitchen for the first time. I would have had to be in Colombia and study at the Spanish School Nueva Lengua to do it!

Four afternoons a week, the school organizes “extracurricular” activities. Today we went to San Francisco del Padre Pio dining room to serve food to the elderly and vulnerable. This foundation serves food to the poorest “grandparents” in the dangerous Girardot neighborhood of Bogotá every day, including Sundays and holidays. And the school Nueva Lengua financially supports this foundation.

When we arrived at the dining room, about thirty elderly people were waiting for us in a small chapel. I can't describe what I felt at that moment. I can only say that I was impressed. After a short introduction, a short prayer, we walked out to applause and headed to the kitchen where giant pots and pans awaited us. Then we prepare portions of soup, rice, sausages, salad and pasta and then serve them to the “grandparents”.

For some of these “grandparents”, this lunch is the only meal of the day. The “lucky ones” live with their families. But most of them have no one, no family to help them or just spend time with them.

At the end of the meal, the "grandparents" hugged each other and thanked us one by one. A gentleman in a very elegant suit thanked me in French. A lady wanted her to find a rich husband so I wouldn't miss anything. Another lady took me in her arms.

I thank Gloria, the coordinator of the foundation, as well as the school Nueva Lengua for allowing us to live this extraordinary experience and meet these wonderful people!
