In the heart of Bogotá, on Calle 63 with Carrera 70, is the Botanical Garden, a green lung and research center on ecosystems in urban and rural areas. With more than 900 species of vegetation —78% native and 22% endemic— The Botanical Garden of Bogotá is consolidated as one of the most important dthe continent.
In 2021, the largest greenhouse circuit in Latin America opened its doors: the Tropicario de Bogotá. An ecological complex that is committed to the care, conservation and dissemination of Colombia's plant heritage.
The place is incredible: you can visit the natural and cultural richness of different ecosystems, from the humid and tropical forests of the south of the country, to the dry forests and Andean super moors... all in less than 3800 square meters.
The páramos, superpáramos and other Andean ecosystems are characterized by their altitude. Classified based on their elevation above sea level, in Colombia we would have the following dry forests: the andean jungle from 2.600 meters high; between 3.000 and 4.000m, the paramo; then, from 4.000 to 5.000, the so-called we overcame; and finally the perpetual snow, above the incredible height of 5.000 meters above sea level.
The importance of these ecosystems for biodiversity and for our daily life is immense: that is where the water for our use is born, they are stones and lagoons in the highest parts of Colombia. The condor, Colombia's national animal, lives in this habitat. In this section there is also the large lagoon of the Sierra, the Nevado del Cocuy, the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta and the páramo of Sumapaz, among others.
In the tropical humid forest we find the Colombian Pacific and the Amazon, with an extension of more than 100.000 square kilometers. You can see ceibas, carnivorous plants, indigenous cultures, and exuberant and exotic plants such as yagé (also known as ayahuasca).
Finally, in the tropical dry ecosystem are located the lands that are below 1.000 m above sea level. They are dry and arid ecosystems, in which several of the cities in Colombia have been established, such as Cali, and departments such as Magdalena and Cauca, or the islands of San Andrés and Providencia. We find small leaves and thorns, an example of this are cacti, which adapt like this to avoid losing water, since the larger the leaf, the more water evaporates, and during a time of year in this area 70% of the trees lose The leaves, therefore, due to the high temperatures, do not invest energy in keeping their leaves standing.
We can witness all this in this ecological outing with the school Nueva Lengua, one of the most incredible that we organize as part of our daily tours and activities for all students.
