Founded in 1572, Guaduas was established from the beginning as a mandatory stop in the middle of the historic Camino Real de Santa Fe, an important commercial route that for more than three centuries connected the capital with the Magdalena River, the Caribbean Sea and Europe.

After three hundred years of colonization, the Colombian people finally achieved independence from Spain in 1819, and although this has been an autonomous country since then, we Colombians have had the privilege of preserving many of the cultural and architectural treasures established in those years within our territory.

One of these treasures is historic center of Guaduas, a beautiful park built in the best style of the colonial urban planning: with a cobblestone floor, with the cathedral located on one side, the old government house on the other, and surrounded by houses that have preserved the facades and the original appearance of the fascinating colonial era.

Among the milestones that have taken place in Guaduas during its more than 400 years of history, the passage of the Royal Botanical Expedition, led by the Spanish botanist José Celestino Mutis at the end of the 18th century. During this, the plant that gives its name to the town was classified for the first time: the guadua, a species of South American bamboo that spreads and adorns the mountains and riversides of the region.

With an estimated population of 41,000 inhabitants, Guaduas remains today an important ecotourism destination, where nature lovers can experience first-hand the tranquility and beauty of this Andean paradise, just 3 hours from Bogotá.
