This is the story of many foreigners who have met Colombians in their countries or within Colombia itself. A story full of love, heartbreak or simply friendship, but also of unforgettable experiences that two people from two different countries or cultures have lived through. Some of them have even found their better half and have even decided to take a big step: live together or get married.

But not everything is rosy, because some of these couples have communication problems... and I don't mean arguments. It happens that neither of them speaks the language of the other, so they end up speaking in a language that is not their own or, in the best of cases, only one of the two can speak the language of their partner, but at a very basic level.

Can this be the same as when the two speak the same language? Of course not. Each country has its own language and traditions, and it is well known that language is key to understanding people's way of life. Colombia has, then, its own culture, its own style, its own traditions and, of course, the key to getting involved in all this is its language, the Spanish.

After a foreigner makes the decision to marry a Colombian, he will have to meet his partner's family.

"Spooky! What I'm gonna say? What am I going to wear? What can and can't I do? I don't speak their language and they don't speak mine either! What if I say something wrong, incorrect or rude? Should I ask my partner to translate or will it be rude?”: surely some of these questions have crossed the minds of many of you.

If you want an honest answer, it is best to start learning Spanish. For example, an Egyptian man fell in love with a Colombian woman and after understanding the differences between cultures, they decided to get married. But living in Colombia is a challenge because it is necessary speak Spanish if you want to work, buy something, talk to the in-laws or just talk to your partner. For this reason, the Egyptian, the American or the Canadian decided learn Spanish.

We Colombians are very happy, relaxed, friendly and partiers (that is, we like parties). But, in some contexts it is essential to know how to say and pronounce some words correctly which, if said incorrectly, can lead to embarrassing or rude misunderstandings. Of course, there is no need to be afraid; On the contrary, this can be an impulse to improve the Spanish that is needed to communicate with your mother-in-law or your joking brothers-in-law, because at family gatherings they tell jokes for which you would also like to laugh.

We all fall in love at some point in life. And we can fall in love not only with the person, but also with their culture. If you are going to live in Colombia with your partner, it is necessary to learn Spanish, a language spoken in more than 20 countries in the world. In this way, you can live a Colombian life.
